You have a number of tests to check for ovarian cancer. This usually includes blood tests and an ultrasound scan. The cancer antigen 125 ( CA 125 ) blood test generally isn't recommended if you have an average risk of ovarian cancer. Sometimes ovarian cancer causes a higher level of CA 125 in the blood. A CA125 blood test result above 35 is not in itself a diagnosis of ovarian cancer. If the level of CA125 in your blood is 35 or higher, your GP should arrange for you to have an ultrasound scan of your tummy and pelvis. Ovarian cancer is a growth of cells that forms in the ovaries. The cells multiply quickly and can invade and destroy healthy body tissue. The female reproductive system contains two ovaries, one on each side of the uterus. The ovaries — each about the size of an almond — produce eggs (ova) as well as the hormones estrogen and progesterone.
