The Pong Dam, also known as the Beas Dam, is an earth-fill embankment dam constructed on the river Beas in the wetland of Shivalik hills in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Pong Dam is a 133 m tall earth-fill dam in Himachal Pradesh, India, built for irrigation and hydroelectric power. It created Maharana Pratap Sagar, a bird sanctuary and a major displacement site for 90,702 people. The Pong Dam was constructed in 1974 on the Beas River for water storage, flood control, and electricity generation. As the reservoir filled, it created a massive lake covering over 45,000 hectares, now called Pong Lake or Maharana Pratap Sagar.
