Benzaldehyde: The structure of p−methylbenzaldehyde is shown

The structure of p−methylbenzaldehyde is shown in the figure. In this compound, the methyl group is located at para position with respect to the aldehyde (functional group) Assertion : Benzaldehyde gives a positive test with Benedict's and Fehling's solution. Reason: Benzaldehyde gives silver mirror with Tollen's reagent. Benzaldehyde will undergo Cannizzaro reaction on treatment with concentration N a O H to produce benzyl alcohol and salt of benzoic acid as it does not contain alpha hydrogen. Aldehyde having no α hydrogen cannot undergo aldol condensation. By the shown figure there is no α−H present in trichloroethanal and benzaldehyde .
