Vice Admiral (VAdm) Antonette Wemyss-Gorman is an international trailblazer in military leadership. In January 2022, she became the only female head of an armed force globally when she was appointed Chief of Defence Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). Many major countries of the world have created the post of the Chief of Defence Staff to bring more jointness and integration in their Armed Forces. These include Italy, France, China, UK, USA, Canada and Japan. The Centre has extended the tenure of General Anil Chauhan as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Indian Armed Forces till May 30, 2026, according to the Ministry of Defence. General Anil Chauhan, who was commissioned in 1981, has been serving as CDS since September 30, 2022. The role of the Chief of Defence staff is to bring about jointness between the Armed Forces of the country in training, procurement, staffing and operation.
