Overview and steps of the citric acid cycle , also known as the Krebs cycle or tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle . How pyruvate from glycolysis is converted to acetyl CoA so it can enter the citric acid cycle . Pyruvate is modified by removal of a carboxyl group followed by oxidation, and then attached to Coenzyme A. The Krebs cycle occurs in the mitochondrial matrix, where pyruvate is turned into acetyl-CoA, which then goes through a series of reactions, producing ATP, NADH, and FADH2. Glycolysis , where the simple sugar glucose is broken down, occurs in the cytosol. Pyruvate, the product from glycolysis , is transformed into acetyl CoA in the mitochondria for the next step.
