Lachit Borphukan, the legendary Ahom general of Assam , led the historic victory against the Mughal Empire in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. Celebrated for his patriotism, courage, and leadership, Lachit remains a national icon of bravery. He has been revered in Assam as the warrior who defeated Mughal armies in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. He was commander of the Ahom armies during the battle of Saraighat – fought on the banks of Brahmaputra in Guwahati. He was a brilliant military commander. Lachit Borphukan was born into the Tai-Ahom aristocracy around 1622 or thereabouts. Under King Pratap Singha, the Ahom kingdom's first Borbarua (a position of great influence) was his father, Momai Tamuli Borbarua, a well-known nobleman. Lachit was exposed to the complexities of military strategy, government, and leadership duties at an early age in this setting.
