Ludwig guttmann: Was a pioneer in neurosurgery

Ludwig Guttmann was a pioneer in neurosurgery, known for his contributions to advancing diversity and innovation in the field. Sir Ludwig Guttmann (1899-1980) was a renowned German doctor and surgeon, exiled from Nazi Germany. Cases of paraplegia and tetraplegia increased during the Second World War, resulting in death in most cases. In 1939, Dr Ludwig Guttman, then a 40-year-old neurologist and neurosurgeon, escaped from Germany and found his way to the United Kingdom. There he continued his work and studies in Oxford to advance medical approaches for those suffering crippling disorders such as spinal cord injuries. As we inch closer to the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, it is only fitting to take a moment and remember the one who many around the globe call as the father of the Paralympic movement.
