The olecranon (olecranon process) is the large, superior projection on the proximal part of ulna. It curves anteriorly at its top, forming a prominent tip which is accommodated by the olecranon fossa of humerus during forearm extension. During adolescence, an elbow injury can damage the growth plate, or olecranon underdevelopment may occur after repeated microtrauma (especially in athletes). It bears the olecranon, trochlear notch, coronoid process, radial notch, sublime tubercle and ulnar tuberosity. The olecranon is a prominent, proximal projection from the posterior aspect of the proximal ulna and serves as the point of insertion for the triceps brachii muscle. The elbow is the joint connecting the proper arm to the forearm. It is marked on the upper limb by the medial and lateral epicondyles, and the olecranon process. Structually, the joint is classed as a synovial joint, and functionally as a hinge joint.
