You all must have seen flowers , haven’t you? What’s your favourite flower ? So, let’s learn something new about flowering plants today. All plants that produce flowers are flowering plants or angiosperms. Angiosperm plants come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, from 40-foot dogwood trees to 8-inch dandelions. The shoot produces flowers only after the plant has undergone vegetative growth. Flowers can be found in the axils of leaves or on a specialized flowering branch called the peduncle or floral axis. Each flower has a stalk, or pedicel, that culminates in a broad surface called the thalamus or torus. A flower may have one or multiple carpels. If all four whorls (the calyx, corolla, androecium, and gynoecium) are present, the flower is described as complete. If any of the four parts is missing, the flower is described as incomplete. Flowers that contain both an androecium and a gynoecium are referred to as perfect, androgynous or hermaphrodites. The flower can be classified into two categories: complete and incomplete. A complete flower contains all the essential parts for reproduction, including sepals, petals, stamens, and pistils. In contrast, an incomplete flower is missing one or more of these fundamental structures.
