The Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin was introduced with the view to boost the "Housing for All" scheme by the year 2022. The main aim of the PMAY-G scheme is to provide pakka house with some of the basic amenities. To fill the gaps in previous rural housing plans and to fulfil the government’s promise of “Housing for All” by 2022, the Indira Awaas Yojana was revamped into Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G). The Prime Minister launched this on November 20, 2016, with a goal to build 2.95 Crore houses by 2022.
