4. Public Spaces: Sexual harassment in public spaces, such as streets, parks, public transportation, and markets, is a widespread problem in India. Women and girls often face verbal harassment , unwanted advances, groping, and other forms of sexual misconduct while going about their daily lives. Initiatives such as “Safe City” programs, community patrols, and public awareness campaigns aim to address street harassment and create safer environments for women and girls. At its core, sexual harassment is any unwanted behavior—physical, verbal, or even subtle gestures—that has a sexual undertone and makes someone feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or disrespected at work. The POSH Act states that ‘ sexual harassment ’ is any unwelcome sexual behaviour, whether directly expressed or implied, and includes the cases of physical contact and advances, or a sexual favour demanded or requested, or making remarks with sexual overtones, or showing pornography or other offensive material, or acting in an unwelcome ... Sexual harassment is defined by the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 as any unwanted physical, verbal, or non-verbal conduct of a sexual nature, including advances and physical contact, demands or requests for sexual favors, sexually suggestive comments, the display of pornographic material, and any other unwelcome patterns of conduct.
