Turkey earthquake: A strong earthquake struck western Turkey

A strong earthquake struck western Turkey on Monday night, toppling several already-damaged buildings and injuring at least 22 people, officials said. Magnitude 6.2 earthquake jolts Turkiye’s Istanbul One person is reportedly injured from jumping off a balcony during the 6.2 magnitude quake. A 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook Turkey on Thursday evening. The quake reportedly struck Konya province in Turkey ’s Central Anatolia region. Turkey sits on top of major fault lines, and earthquakes are frequent. In 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed more than 53,000 people in Turkey and destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern provinces. Another 6,000 people were killed in the northern parts of neighboring Syria.
